Back to school in 2017

by Samantha Morris

Every year I promise myself that the year ahead will be different!  Not that the year that has passed has been awful in anyway, I just like things to evolve and to learn new things.  So with that in mind, 2017 will see me head to Norfolk Painting School for a professional oils diploma course.

I attended a 5-day oil painting course in February 2016 and I loved the fact that I could spend the whole week learning theory and practice in the good company of 10 other keen artists, expertly lead by Martin Kinnear.

Co- founder and Course Director Martin Kinnear is a hugely experienced painter and teacher. Aside from running the School’s teaching program, Martin is a recognised and published expert in all things oil painting, contributing regularly to The Artist, Artists & Illustrators, Leisure Painter and International Artist – who designated him as a ‘Master Painter of the World‘. Respected throughout the industry, Martin has strong links with some of the world’s leading picture restorers and colourmen and has exhibited with societies such as the ROI, RBA as well as at prestigious opens such as the Discerning Eye and Eastern Open. Martin is also a director and co-founder of The New British Art Gallery and champions opportunities for young artists.

The school has three fully equipped studios in their new 9000 sq ft school, and an amazing professional commercial gallery for the use of the Diploma students.  I will be guided through a whole range of specialist techniques and learn the skills I really want, and be taken right up to a professional gallery show at graduation.  It’s an amazing facility for oil painters, in fact ‘the best in the UK‘ according to the AV specialists who kitted out our three demonstration theatres.

I look forward to sharing my progress, highs and lows with you as I attend the course throughout the year.
