Seize the Day - Vlog #2

by Samantha Morris

Come with me and my Dad, to the southern part of the Lake District to the town of Kendal that stands on the river Kent, where there’s a hint of mint in the air, hundreds of shiny grey cobbled ginnels and an ever-changing backdrop of misty low hills.  It’s about an hour from Barrow-in-Furness, where I was born.

Staying at “The Colour House” with it’s bold hues and bright wall coverings aided maximum inspiration for my Dad and I.  The owners of our accommodation, Merv and Caryn have artistic backgrounds too.  Merv a gardener business and an artist, specialising in drawing.  Caryn studied graphic design, she created album covers for bands such as Duran Duran and Culture Club and went on to work for bands including Everything But The Girl and The Smiths.  Their son, Ollie has also found his creative groove with photography.

We seize the day and set ourselves the challenge of creating a visual memory capsule of our Kendal adventure, we eat cake, sneak into the children play area to swing on their swings, indulge in cocktails and meet other local artists; Julie Ann Scott who creates intensely coloured oil paintings and Thurline De Cock who is an animal artist with a great love of cows too!

Funnily enough even though we were surrounded by all of the colours in the colour wheel in our accommodation, it was the greys, blues and purples of cumbrian slate, cobbles and misty hills that caught my eye, so once back home in the cowshed, that became my colour pallet for this painting.

This painting will form part of “Cows in the Attic” project which you’ll hear more about towards the end of February.  I use Windsor & Newton acrylic paints, silver leaf, on Loxley Gold 20 x 20 cm cotton canvas.

Be inspired

Love Sam and the cows

Every Sunday I will publish a short film that will take you with me on my ‘who knows where’ adventures finding inspiration and then back to the studio taking you through the stages of creating a finished piece of art.
