I’ve had a special request for this one

An all-day “How to Paint a Cow – Statement Scale” workshop, working on a big 100 × 100 cm canvas. It’s a slower, more spacious day focused on painting with confidence and letting the cow be about presence and creating at scale.

We’ll build the painting in stages, and for those who’d like to, there’ll be opportunities to experiment with distressing the surface, creating texture or adding spray effects to create atmosphere and depth. Everything is guided, optional, and supported, nothing is compulsory.

The large canvas is included, and this is probably not something you’d normally attempt at home.

Working on a large 100 × 100 cm canvas, you’ll spend the day painting a cow that feels grounded, calm, and full of quiet character. The focus is on atmosphere, weight, and suggestion allowing parts of the painting to soften, disappear, and emerge in their own time.

At this scale, painting becomes more physical and more intuitive. Marks loosen, decisions simplify, and there’s space to step back, pause, and respond. The cow isn’t built hair by hair; it’s shaped through light, shadow, and restraint.

The pace of the day is intentionally unhurried. You’ll work in clear stages, with guidance throughout, building confidence as the painting develops. No previous experience of large-scale painting is needed — everything is broken down and supported.

What we’ll explore

  • Approaching a large canvas with calm and confidence

  • Using a limited, moody palette to create atmosphere

  • Blocking in shape and form without overworking

  • Softening edges and letting parts of the painting dissolve

  • Suggesting character through posture, weight, and stillness

  • Knowing when to pause — and when to stop

What to expect

This is a relaxed, supportive day with time to look, reflect, and adjust. There’s no pressure to copy a reference exactly and no expectation of tight detail. The emphasis is on trusting the process and allowing the painting to breathe.

By the end of the day, you’ll have a finished, statement-scale painting and a new confidence in working larger, looser, and with more intention.
